How are you connecting to SQL Server? SQL Server login or Windows login?
Do you have Server Security configuration set up correcly?
Following error also comes up when security says "windows mode" and we
connect with "sql server login" or vice versa.

Connection error
when i try to register an instance of SQL server sometimes it's registered
successfully and sometimes not, giving me the error SQL server Error:17 SQL
server does not exist or access denied.
I installed service pack 3 and i still get error.
Also when i try to add a Data source, i can do it successfully using named
pipes as the network protocol but it fails with TCP/IP.
Thanks for your helpWhat is the OS Error printed when the connection fails from a Test ODBC DSN?
Example: 11001 , 10060 These are sockets errors.
Post the Exact error message and/or search on the errors in the kb article.

Connection Error
I have a VB6 program that talks to SQL Server 2000 database. The Connection
String is as below:
Provider=SQLOLEDB.1;Persist Security Info=False;User ID=" & M_USER_NAME &
";Password=" & M_PASSWORD & ";Initial Catalog=" & Database & ";Data Source="
& M_SERVER
When the program is idle for a while, the connection terminates.
Also, when I try to connect using ODBC I get the following error
Connection failed;.
SQLState: '01000'
SQL Server Error: 53
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]ConnectionOpen(Conn
ect())
Connection failed;
SQLState: '08001'
SQL Server Error: 17
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]SQL Server does not
exist or
access denied.
Any ideas or suggestions. Dont know where to start looking.
The SQL Server is running. I have double-checked that.

I searched the entire net but couldnt find a solution.
If you try disabling and enabling the network connection, it will work again

08S01 - Communication Link Failure. Often indicates that some accident
happened on the SQL Server, which forced SQL Server to sever the
connection. Usually accompanied by stack dumps in the SQL Server error log.
(That is not the eventlog.) Such crashes are due to bugs in SQL Server, and
should not occur in an ideal world.
But a flaky network could also be the cause.

The links given by you were of great help. I was using the same
connection object for multiple threads. I used a new connection object and
the issue is now resolved.
Thanks

Thanks for your hel|||You must have appropriate information to connect to the server, (name or IP,
and port number)...
The server must be listening on the same network protocol that the client is
trying to connect with ( server network utility, and client network
utility).
Lastly you must register the server with a login that is a valid SQL server
login for the server.
