check connectivity with sql server
use tcp:<server> to connect with tcp
or
use np:<server> to connect with Named Pipes
later, configure Client Network utility to use one of these protocol and try
connect from mmc

connection from SQLS database to Visual Studio. Timeout failed.

I have a databse in SQL Server 2005 Sept Beta 2. On another partition I have Visual Studio 8. I want to establish a connection between the two.

Doing it programmatically in a C# code program fails. The connection string does not give me an error on debug.

Doing it via GUI in VS fails on the account of "timeout failed..."

I tried to copy the whole database from SQL Server directory into VS directory - the same result.

Amazingly, I was able to connect to my FoxPro 9 database with no problem. Also an Access database is connected.

Is there a way to increase this parameter: timeout? Where is set up?

Thanks. Most likely the SQL Server is not running. Is this the same machine (SQL Server and VS)? Copying files is not necessary. Being on different partitions is ok as well. Can you connect using sqlcmd? If not, what is the error message you get?

When you type 'net start' in the command line do you see SQL Server started? Or check services in the Control Panel.

Boris.

Connection from Access to SQL Server does not show ALL tables

I have an ODBC connection to a SQL server database and for some reason I can
see some of the tables but not all of them when i try to establish a link to
a table.
any ideas? Is there such a thing as a hidden table at the SQL server end ?
Steve
No, there is not. I'd check your permissions to see if you have
adequate permissions for the ODBC login/DSN you are using to connect,
and if that's not it, check the syntax in your code for typos in
names, etc.

Connecting to SQL Server OVer Internet

I know it is possible to establish a connection to an SQL Server over
the Internet via Enterprise Manager. My question is, how secure is this
connection? Is there a best practices document for this type of
connection?

Here is my scenario:

We are looking to outsource our web hosting. Currently, we upload
client sensitive data to our SQL Server databases within our internal
network. If we outsource, the SQL server will be on a different
network. We are behind a firewall here and the dedicated hosted SQL
Server will also be behind a firewall. Is the Enterprise Manager
connection succeptable to hackers? If so any reccomendations on how to
accomplish this would be appreciated.

Another scenario is connecting to the SQL Server through a DSN. Can
this be accomplished from inside our network to outsourced server? How
secure would that connection be?

Thanks in Advance. As an ISP with over 700 sites connecting to various SQL and mySQL databases,
I can tell you that there are many ways to accomplish this. The most common
method that we use is SQL replication. Assuming that your new ISP has a SQL
Server they can setup replication and sync the data. This scenario will
allow you (the publisher) to control which tables can be accessed by the
subscriber (your Internet Service Provider).
Another method would be for you to write the communication layer and expose
it to your ISP via .NET web service or COM+.

I haven't had a security breech (*knock on wood*).
I think just like anything else it's as secure as long as the service packs
are all up to date.

If you are worried about it being secure, then why not set up a VPN
connection between the two sites. This is really quite straight forward with
Windows.

Brian.

www.cryer.co.uk/brian|||Thanks Brian. Can you point me in the direction of establishing a VPN?
The server will be a 2003 server running SQL Server.

connecting to sql server from asp page

Hi,
I'm trying to establish a connection to Sql Server from an asp page using a System DSN.
I setup the System DSN to use Sql Server authentication; the userid and password
were stored with the ODBC configuration utility. Sql Server is configured to used both Windows and Sql Server authentication.
I was not able to connect using the DSN from an asp page - the exception was as follows
Message "ERROR [28000] [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Login

connection.
ERROR [28000] [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Login failed

The code snippet:
Dim connString As String = "DSN=myDSN;"
Dim conn As OdbcConnection = New OdbcConnection(connString)
Try
conn.Open()
Catch ex As Exception
End Try
Any help or article would be appreciated.
Ronny,
you'll need to complete the DNS connection string with login info. For
example:
oConn.Open "DSN=mySystemDSN;" & _
"Uid=myUsername;" & _
"Pwd=myPassword"
Also, check that SQL Server in in mixed authentication mode.HTH,Paul Ibison
