Connection option in MSSQL2005

Hi,
There is a setting in option-> connection -> 'Perform translation for character data' in Query Analyzer in MSSQL 2000. Is there any option in MSSQL2005 has simliar function? Thanks in advance

Connection from command prompt

All,
Though sound silly, but I require it by any chance...
I need to connect to the sql server 2000 from command prompt and then I
need to run query and see the resultset.
Any suggestion...'osql.exe in SQL 2000 (in SQL 2005 this command line utility is replace
by sqlcmd.exe). You can use the -q or -Q switches to specify a batch to
run rather than use it in interactive mode. Or even use the -i switch
to specify an input file that contains the SQL batch you wish to run.

Connection designer in RS 2005?

I have upgraded our Custom Data Extension from SQL 2000 Reporting Services
to 2005. I see that the Report Wizard will now launch my Query Designer for
editing command strings (thank you!) but I still can not see a way to get RS
to launch my "Connection Designer" dialog. When running Report Wizard or
Add New Data Source dialog, the "Edit" button becomes greyed out when I
change the Data Source Type to my Provider. How can I plug my Connection
String editor user interface at this point?

Connection Broken when executing select statement

Hi,
I have written a query that gives the following message
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]ConnectionCheckForD
ata
(CheckforData()).
Server: Msg 11, Level 16, State 1, Line 0
General network error. Check your network documentation.
Connection Broken
I have seen several posts with this problem but none seem to match mine.
here is the query
select distinct
case
when 'ct' = 'CT' then 'CTM'
when 'ct' = 'SD' then 'SDM'
when 'ct' = 'TFVT' then 'VTM'
end, null, 'L', 'AV-A196', 'AV-A196', null, null, Service_Area,
Locality, Location,
Segment_Ref, Vicinity, Map_Ref, Service_Status, Condition_Status,
Charge_Key,
Asset_Owner, Resp_Area, Resp_Position, Data_Changed, null, GIS_Tile,
Note_Text, Asset_Region, Asset_Ranking
from asset
where category = 'ct'
and asset_Id not in (60325, 60377,60274, 60397)
and ((len(local_id) < 6 and local_id = 'AV-A196')
or (len(local_id) >= 6 and substring(local_id, 1, len(local_id)-6) =
'AV-A196'))
I have tested this on a SQL Server 2000 machine by creating a new database,
importing the asset table of 66000 records. Then created new indexes on
Asset_id (clustered primary key)
Local_id (unique index)
Category (index)
If I remove any of the conditions in the where statement it runs fine.
However with them all in their it breaks.
I am running 8.00.859 (sp3)
Any Suggestions

Maybe I'm reading the SQL statement incorrectly, but how would this
statement ever be true:
(len(local_id) < 6 and local_id = 'AV-A196')
That would seem to imply the lengh of the column must be 5 or less _and_
it must be equal to a 7 character string, at the same time.
Just curious.

Fair Call,
That part is just there as a means to stop the statement trying to process
Local_ID's less than 6 characters long with the second part of the condition
statement. It is meant to always be false.
I was gettting incorrect length to the substring function. I tried to get it
to process the conditions in the order that they are written to exclude the
unwanted rows. Maybe there is a way, I don't know.
But thanks for the quick response though...|||Hi
Check your SQL Server log. You may find that your process was terminated at
a server level. If it was, try to go to 8.00.0878 and if that does not solve
it, open a call with PSS.

Connection Broken when executing select statement

Hi,
I have written a query that gives the following message
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]ConnectionCheckForData
(CheckforData()).
Server: Msg 11, Level 16, State 1, Line 0
General network error. Check your network documentation.
Connection Broken
I have seen several posts with this problem but none seem to match mine.
here is the query
select distinct
case
when 'ct' = 'CT' then 'CTM'
when 'ct' = 'SD' then 'SDM'
when 'ct' = 'TFVT' then 'VTM'
end, null, 'L', 'AV-A196', 'AV-A196', null, null, Service_Area,
Locality, Location,
Segment_Ref, Vicinity, Map_Ref, Service_Status, Condition_Status,
Charge_Key,
Asset_Owner, Resp_Area, Resp_Position, Data_Changed, null, GIS_Tile,
Note_Text, Asset_Region, Asset_Ranking
from asset
where category = 'ct'
and asset_Id not in (60325, 60377,60274, 60397)
and ((len(local_id) < 6 and local_id = 'AV-A196')
or (len(local_id) >= 6 and substring(local_id, 1, len(local_id)-6) = 'AV-A196'))
I have tested this on a SQL Server 2000 machine by creating a new database,
importing the asset table of 66000 records.

Connection Broken

Hi,
Our developer ran a sp in query analyzer (local), and in the middle got this message:
==============================================
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][Shared Memory]ConnectionRead (recv()).
Server: Msg 11, Level 16, State 1, Line 0
General network error. Check your network documentation.
ODBC: Msg 0, Level 16, State 1
Communication link failure

Connection Broken
==============================================
OS: Win2k Adv Srv
SQL 2k sp3

Thanks for your help!Communication Link Failure mostly occurs if the the underlying network
connection is inconsistent.

What is the net-lib your app is using to connect to SQL? What is the frequency of these errors? What is your MDAC version?

I would suggest capturing a network monitor trace to make sure network packets are not dropped. You want to capture the netmon trace at both the client and the server when the problem happens. Go to www.microsoft.com\data and download the latest mdac version. Also, run dbcc checkdb and/or dbcc dbreindex to ensure your data is in good shape.

If your network is local and persistent I would also check the hardware, network card, hub or cable. Any of these could generate the error.|||Originally posted by oj_n

Thanks,
this process was started in Query Analyzer on the local server. There were a couple insert errors before this (foreign key voilation). I'll check the data. Thanks again.

Connection Broken

I am updating records in my database with the procedure below. The data is
updated as it should but the Enterprise Manager (SQL Query Analyzer) gives
the error:
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][Shared Memory]ConnectionCheckForData
(CheckforData()).
Server: Msg 11, Level 16, State 1, Line 0
General network error. Check your network documentation.
Connection Broken
It looks like this error is blocking the SQL Server from responding to new
requests immediately (3-4 seconds) after an update.
Any ideas of what can cause this problem?
The sql call with belonging SQL procedure (below) has been tested on several
SQL servers and is working OK, but on this server I am running it against at
the moment it gives error above.

I am new to SQL Server 2005 and have a simple question/scenario. I would like to use cubes to improve query performance. If I build OLAP cubes with Analysis Services, will SQL Server automatically pick the 'best' cube to resolve user queries to the underlying tables?

For example: A cube is created to sum up sales by month from a fact table (Sales_Fact) called Monthly_Sales.

The user enters the query: Select datepart(month, Sales_Date) from Sales_Fact group by datepart(month, Sales_Date) .

Will the Monthly_Sales cube used to resolve the query?

Thanks

Johnsoi

You are bit far off on the learning side Smile

To use Analysis Services to the most part you will need different client side applicaitons. The query language is different: it is MDX and not SQL.

Suggest you install SQL Server samples and go through tutorial see if you pick some of the concepts there.

Edward,

Thanks for the reply. So...it looks like SQL Server cannot rewrite queries (from Cognos, Crsytal, etc..) to use predefined OLAP cubes. I am looking for a way to add aggreagate tables (or other summarized objects) to our data warehouse and not require users to know of their existence. Is SQL Server 2005 aggregate aware?

You are bit off again. Smile

SQL Server ships several components in it. One is Analysis Services that allows for creating multidimensional models (OLAP cubes you call it). Analysis Services allow access to the data stored in cubes using MDX query langage.

That is completely different from SQL query language. To access data in Analysis Services you can use serveral client tools. If you are just interested in reports, you can install Reporting Services and use it to access data in cubes.

Connection

Hello,
I don't know why i can not connect to a remote Sql server in my Enterprise
Manager, While i can do it through Query Analyzer.
ThanksHi
What is the error message you are getting?
Are you using the right account to connect?

and you probably need to increase that.
In Enterprise Manager, go up to the menu to Tools, select
Options. This opens the Enterprise Manager Properties
window. Click on the advanced tab and increase the login
timeout to something greater than the default 4 seconds.

Connecting VSS to Query Analyzer

Anyone know of a way to connect Visual Source Safe to query analyzer? I love the functionality of Query analyzer but would like to use some source control with my code. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
VSS has a CLI that can be used to integrate with SQL QA. Ken Henderson's
book "The Guru's Guide to SQL Server Stored Procs, XML & HTML" has a section
dedicated on how to set this up (Pg 113 I think). If you've got a copy of
that book, check it out - this way, you can check in & out of VSS directly
from the Query Analyser. Ken also provides a tool called "GGSQLBuilder" that
lets you build versioned db object scripts from VSS as well. If you haven't
got access to the book, post back & I can send you more instructions if you
want to do this..

|||I you can, get a copy of "the Guru's Guide to SQL Server Stored Procedures..." by Ken Henderson. It has several pages about using source control with QA.
Basically you use the Q.A. tools/customize option to drive the VSS ss.exe program.
For example:
Menu Name: Set Project Path
Command: ss.exe
Args: cp $/path_to_your_project
Menu Name: Set Working Folder
Command: ss.exe
Args: workfold $(FileDir)
Menu Name: Check in Current File
Command: ss.exe
Args: checkin $(FileName) $(FileExt)
InitDir: $(FileDir)
Q.A. Will repace the tokens below when the command is run
$(FilePath) full path to current file (save first or you will get file name with *)
$(FileName) filename without extension
$(FileExt) file ext with leading "."
$(FileDir) dir path of the current file
