Connection options from *nix to SQL Server 2000

Hi All,
There is a possibility that we may need to move our existing W2K servers and
our custom application over to *nix.
I am interested to know what are the options available to us if we stick
with SQL Server 2000 Enterprise as the database on a W2K or W2003 OS.
Is JDBC the way to go? Is there a better option? Likewise we currently use
ATL to access SQL from our application, would an alternative solution offer
the same level of performance and stability?
Any help would be very much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Phil
Phil:
I think you have to basic options for a Java app on UNIX to SQL Server
2000 -- stick w/ JDBC or use a ODBC driver for UNIX, like the one Data
Direct sells.

Connection manager validation within UI

Hi all,

I need to validate a custom connection manager within its custom user interface, like the FlatFileConnectionManager does it, by showing errors and warnings at the bottom of the window.

How can I do that since SSIS provides only a ConnectionManager object with the IDtsConnectionManagerUI::Initialize method, and this object doesn't contain any Validate method?

Note that for a custom data flow component, SSIS provides a ComponentMetaData object which supports a Validate method.

Thanks.

Pascal

The UI class is just the stub that allows SSIS to find your UI implementation. You need to add a form that displays controls for setting properties and such like. Within that form you can call the Validate method on your connection class, capture the messages and display them as you wish. There is a connection manager sample with UI in the updated samples available from the MS site, Downloads area. For more samples, look at a task, as this follows exactly the same pattern as for a connection. Components are quite a bit different.

|||I can't call the Validate method of my custom connection manager because SSIS doesn't give me my object but a ConnectionManager which is not a ConnectionManagerBase type...

Connection in transformation component

Hi,

I'm on writing a custom data flow component (transformation). For this I need access to an external datasource. As best practice, it seems that you should use a connectionmanager in the package.

But I don't really know how to access them.

I've overwritten the AquireConnections() to lookup in the RuntimeConnectionCollection for the connection managers. But It seems it doesnt get called. If I call it my own, for example in validate (just for debugging purposes) the collection is empty, although there are two connectionmanagers in the package.

What am I doing wrong or has someone a code snippet for me.

Thanks T.

To make the package connections available within the AcquireConnection or ReleaseConnection method, (make sure you use the latter to close any connection resources), you first have define the component as having one or more connections. You do this in the ProvideComponentProperties method, so just add it and give it a name, description if you feel like it.

IDTSRuntimeConnection90 runtimeConnection = ComponentMetaData.RuntimeConnectionCollection.New();

runtimeConnection.Name = "Reference Data";

This acts as a placeholder, so that if you were to now look at the built-in Advanced UI Editor, on the first page you will see the connection listed, ready for you to choose one of the existing package connections.

following error
"
Request for the permission of type

can any one please suggest me how to go about this
Thanks
Srujan.NDid you configure a Code Access Security group for your assembly?
Search the newsgroup and you'll find several posts on custom assembly
and Code Access Security.

Connection designer in RS 2005?

I have upgraded our Custom Data Extension from SQL 2000 Reporting Services
to 2005. I see that the Report Wizard will now launch my Query Designer for
editing command strings (thank you!) but I still can not see a way to get RS
to launch my "Connection Designer" dialog. When running Report Wizard or
Add New Data Source dialog, the "Edit" button becomes greyed out when I
change the Data Source Type to my Provider. How can I plug my Connection
String editor user interface at this point?
Thanks!Hello Stephen,
This is a quick note that I am consulting in the internal discussion group

Connecting to Webservice from DTS

I created a custom DTS object that does its work by calling a
webservice. When you create the object in DTS, it lets you set the
user/pw you want to use to authenticate to the webservice. The problem
I am having is that once I authenticate to the webservice within DTS,
it always uses the same authentication when contacting the service.

So, for example, I drop a new instance of my object into a package. It
connects to the webservice as me. I set up the parameters of the task,
including telling it to connect as User="test". If I run it, my code
sets the credentials correctly on the webservice, but the webservice
still gets called as me.

If I exit out of SQL Server and go back in, and run it, it correctly
connects as User="test". But then if I try to edit the task, and give
my own user and password, it still always tries to connect as "test".

It seems whoever I initially connect to the webservice as, that is the
information that DTS will use for the entire session.

Is there any way to do what I want to do?

I have no idea - you might want to ask in microsoft.public.sqlserver.dts, to
see if someone there knows about DTS caching properties inappropriately.
Since you seem to be saying that your own custom task is not behaving
correctly, you'll probably have to give more details about exactly how
you've implemented it, to make it clear why you believe the problem lies
with DTS and not your task.
